It all started…
…when Sheena Gaston came to South Africa in 2005. She asked to visit the children in the government hospital nearby. She found that the children were well cared for physically with good treatment, food and accommodation. However, she was surprised that many children had no visitors and there were no toys, games etc to stimulate them. Later she learned that there was no education even though children could be in hospital for weeks or months. She started visiting in the hospital on a regular basis.
And so the work of Zanini Bantwana was started. Sheena was joined in the hospital by her husband Alan and then by Sihle and Sethembile as volunteers.
The three government hospitals in Pietermaritzburg have around 300 children’s beds so there is a great need and the work grew. Gradually it became clear that full-time, employed staff would be needed in addition to volunteers. Now there are 5 staff altogether. (For details see under Our Team.)
